Bedazzled: 5,000 Years of Jewelry

By Denise • Dec 2nd, 2008 • Category: Jewelry, antiques

Jewelry is timeless. It’s something that never went out of style. Personal adornment to amulets, jewelry had always been used. The Walters Art Museum is currently holding
Bedazzled: 5,000 Years of Jewelry
, an exhibition that highlights magnificent jewelry from Henry Walters’ private collection.

The jewelry spans 5,000 years (as the name suggests) with pieces dating back to 3000 B.C. such as Mesopotamian stone pendants. There are more than 200 pieces of what I’m sure are the most stunning of the world’s creations.

You can gawk at examples such as the delicate 19th century Chinese imperial headdress embellished with kingfisher feathers, pearls and gemstones. The Walters’ collection highlights the development of jewelry with regard to style, materials, and innovations.

I, for one, have always been fascinated with jewelry, and believe that there’s more to looking and feeling beautiful while wearing it. To me, jewelry is more of a symbol. A promise ring, a wedding ring, a friendship bracelet… I like wearing jewelry with a story, a history. And these pieces definitely have history.

There’s also something absolutely fascinating about jewelry that had been around since 3000 B.C. If you’re anywhere near the Baltimore area, drop by the Walters Art Museum.
