By Joe Vangieri • May 9th, 2008 • Category: Central Watch, NewsChanging the battery on your watch has never been an easy undertaking. What should be a simple enough errand often raises many problems and questions. Do I need to give it back to the company that made the watch? Will it take a long time for them to fix it? Will it be expensive? Until recently, the answer to each of these questions was regrettably yes. But now, thanks to Watch Battery Central, you can safely answer no to all three, because bringing your dead watches back to life has never been easier! At Watch Battery Central, your watch will be repaired by New York City’s oldest and most trusted family-run watchmaking business.

Watch Battery Central is the brainchild of Steven Kivel, a third generation watchmaker with over 20 years of experience at New York’s preeminent watch repair establishment, Central Watch Band Stand, Ltd. Originally started by Steven’s grandfather, Central Watch has been in business for over 55 years in the heart of Grand Central Station, changing over 150 watch batteries every day. This unparalleled volume has given them experience with every type of watch, from the simplest child’s Timex to the most complicated and exclusive Patek Philippe, and everything else in between: Ebel, Movado, Tag Heuer, Baume & Mercier, Swiss Army, Nike, Casio, etc.
“At Central Watch, we are continuously approached by customers as well as other stores with cracked crystals, broken stems, water damage, scratched cases, etc. – all costly repairs that were caused by nothing more than improper battery service,” explains Steven. “I knew this wasn’t just a problem for New Yorkers, so I set out to design a way for everyone in America to replace their watch batteries quickly, cheaply and, most importantly, risk-free.”
Watch Battery Central charges between $7.99 and $25 per watch, depending on the type of watch and the battery needed. (A comprehensive list of watch brands and the exact prices is available on the website.) Water pressure testing is also available for an additional $7.99. Return shipping costs $4.99 for two or less watches; return shipping is free on service of three or more watches.
Customers can also sign up for one of Watch Battery Central’s two membership programs to save even more time and money. Premiere Membership is free and offers one-click box ordering, special discounts and promotions throughout the year, and every ninth battery change is free. VIP Membership costs $39.95 annually and offers 15% off all battery service, 20% off straps, free water testing on all watches, free buffing of all metal straps, free crystal polishing, free Rush Next Day Service, and every fifth battery change is free.
“My grandfather, who founded Central Watch Band Stand in 1952, always said: ‘There are two kinds of people who work on watches – watchmakers and fools,’” tells Steven. Fortunately for us, Steven falls under the first category…and now with Watch Battery Central, we no long have to worry about those in the second. It’s about time.

Sounds like a great service. It’s always a pain to have to bring watches to a watch store and then go back to pick them up. It would be great to be able to get the battery changes without having to leave my home. I will totally use it next time my watch battery runs out.
