Global Warming in Antarctica
Noted photographer Sebastian Copeland today announces two special events honoring the publication of his book, “Antarctica: The Global Warning†(Earth Aware Editions) http://www.antarcticabook.com/. Winner of the International Photography Award for Professional Photographer of the Year in the Book category, “Antarctica: The Global Warning†documents the devastation of rising temperatures in the Earth’s last great wilderness.
“I am really hoping that the pictures in my book will strike a chord with people and help move them to act,†said Sebastian Copeland. “Most people think of Antarctica as utterly remote from their lives and their worlds – and they’re right, it is thousands of miles away from most of us. But our actions here, in the industrialized world, are changing this fragile, beautiful continent forever, and I wanted my book to ask people to think about that. In a sense, Antarctica is symbolic of everything about Earth and our environment which we can ignore, but hopefully choose not to.â€
“I am so honored that the United Nations will host my photographs,†said Copeland. “It’s especially fitting, because the U.N. has designated March 2007 – March 2008 as ‘International Polar Year.’ Hopefully the photographs from “Antarctica: The Global Warning†will help to show people why we should all care very much about what’s happening at the poles.â€Â
Sebastian Copeland has been an environmental advocate for more than ten years. He serves on the board of directors of Global Green USA, an environmental NGO founded by Mikhail Gorbachev. The voyages to shoot “Antarctica: The Global Warning†were taken on behalf of Global Green, which is one of the beneficiaries of the book. The book is carbon neutral and features a foreword by Gorbachev and a preface by Leonardo DiCaprio. The book also comes with a DVD of footage of the journey to shoot “Antarctica: The Global Warning†which includes the author’s cousin, Orlando Bloom, who accompanied him on the trek.
The events celebrating the release of “Antarctica: The Global Warning†are presented by IWC Schaffhausen, HP, A Small World.com and through the generosity of Robin and Danny Greenspun.
